Palace starts ‘analyzing’ Makati rally statements for sedition

Article posted March 01, 2008 - 10:49 AM
MANILA, Philippines - Malacañang is studying the speeches made by opposition personalities during Friday night's inter-faith rally in Makati City for possible seditious statements.

Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez also admitted they went to National Police headquarters at Camp Crame Friday to monitor the rally because of information that it could turn into a "vigil."

"Ina-analyze pa natin yan (We're still analyzing the statements). I cannot make any statement in that direction," Gonzalez told dzRB radio when asked if they found the statements at the rally seditious.

Many of the speakers at the rally called on President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to step down in the wake of corruption charges stemming from the $329.48-million ZTE broadband network deal mess.

President Arroyo and several government officials holed up at the PNP headquarters in Camp Crame to monitor the progress of the rally, which ended peacefully.

The police and military earlier made a massive show of force, getting 5,000 augmentation forces from Luzon and guarding the Edsa Shrine in Mandaluyong City. For its part, the military's Metro Manila command brought in 11 armored vehicles to Camp Aguinaldo.

On the other hand, Gonzalez admitted they went there to monitor the situation because they had information the protesters planned to stay on beyond the 8 p.m. deadline given to them.

"There had been information that after 8 p.m. they will not leave, so we had to look at the situation carefully. There are some reports to that effect. As far as we are concerned, we'll see to it that it is not violent and the safety of the country will be properly safeguarded," he said.

Gonzalez also admitted that they are treading on dangerous grounds in revoking the pardon for former President Joseph Estrada, who took part in Friday's rally.

Estrada earlier joined calls for President Arroyo to resign her post.

"That is a problem that must be studied very, very carefully. It could create more problems that what it is already," Gonzalez said. - GMANews.TV

Oil prices steady near record levels in Asian trade

Agence France-Presse

SINGAPORE - World oil prices were steady near fresh record levels after speculators piled into the market on the back of a sharp decline in the US dollar following a weak report on US economic growth, dealers said.

In morning trade, New York's main contract, light sweet crude for delivery in April, was a penny higher at 102.60 dollars per barrel.

The contract had surged 2.95 dollars to close at a record 102.59 dollars per barrel in New York on Thursday, eclipsing the prior record of 100.88 dollars reached on Tuesday.

The benchmark New York contract touched an all-time intraday peak of 102.74 dollars on Thursday, and after the market closed reached 102.97 dollars in electronic trade.

Brent North Sea crude for April was steady at its all-time high of 100.90 dollars a barrel reached on Thursday. The contract had struck an intraday record of 101.27 dollars earlier Thursday.

"The fresh record prices coincide with the flow of investor money into commodities, due to the weak US dollar and the increasing threats of inflation in the US," said Victor Shum, senior principal at Purvin and Gertz energy consultants in Singapore.

"The surge in crude oil futures has little to do with market fundamentals now. A price bubble is emerging, and the market faces a risk that crude oil pricing could also collapse as fast as it rose," Shum said.

The dollar's plunge to an all-time low against the euro made dollar-denominated crude oil cheaper for investors using stronger currencies. The euro on Thursday crossed 1.52 dollars for the first time.

The spiking oil prices have stoked inflation in the United States, the world's biggest energy consumer, raising concerns about the Federal Reserve's interest-rate slashing campaign aimed at spurring sluggish growth.

The US Commerce Department said the United States economy expanded at a sluggish 0.6 percent annual pace in the fourth quarter, in a report that left unrevised its prior estimate of output growth.

Analysts had expected a slight upward revision to 0.8 percent for the quarter, which remains the weakest since late 2002.

Runaway price levels have sparked widespread speculation that OPEC, the crude exporters' cartel, will maintain current output levels at a production meeting next week, analysts said.

Ministers from the 13-nation Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) convene in Vienna next Wednesday to decide on output quotas as the Northern hemisphere winter, traditionally when demand peaks, draws to a close.

A top official from OPEC member Nigeria said the cartel was unlikely to cut output if prices remain around record levels.

"If prices don't fall, I don't think that they will lower their production now," an oil adviser to the Nigerian president, Rilwanu Lukman, told AFP.

"If prices remain between 90 and 100 dollars, I think it is unlikely that they do something," he said.

Concern that OPEC could reduce output has been one of the factors driving prices above 100 dollars this week, analysts said.

On Thursday OPEC's smallest producer Ecuador suspended its oil exports because a landslide cut off its main pipeline, state-run Petroecuador oil company said.

Ecuador extracts 511,000 barrels of oil per day, of which 67 percent is exported.

Oil jumps to new record over $101 as dollar slumps

Reuters

SINGAPORE - Oil rallied to new records above $101 on Wednesday, as lackluster US economic data forced the US dollar into a deeper slump, sparking a surge across commodities markets.

US crude rose 72 cents to $101.60 a barrel by 0305 EST, after leaping to a record of $101.70, edging closer to the inflation-adjusted peak of $102.53 seen in 1980.

London Brent crude climbed 67 cents to $100.14 a barrel, after hitting a record of $100.30.

Growing winter fuel demand in the United States and Europe amid falling temperatures, and indications from OPEC that the cartel will not increase production at its meeting next week, helped keep oil on the boil, analysts said.

"Cold weather in the US Northeast and anticipation that OPEC will not increase oil production levels at the March 5 OPEC meeting were also supportive for the oil price," David Moore, a commodities strategist at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia said in a research note.

The dollar slid to a new low versus the euro on Tuesday after reports showed US consumer confidence slumped to its worst level in five years while inflation soared among producers, sparking fears of stagflation. While a weak dollar can sometimes trigger commodities buying as dealers seek to preserve nominal value in other currencies, worries about an economic slowdown have tempered oil's rally in recent weeks by dimming the outlook for global energy demand.

On Tuesday, OPEC's president said members would agree not to raise production, in part because of fears of a demand slowdown.

In the United States, crude oil supplies are forecast to have risen last week by 2.5 million barrels, the seventh increase in a row, as refineries undergoing maintenance have built up stocks.

A Reuters poll of industry analysts predicted US distillates stocks, including heating oil and diesel, were expected to maintain their seasonal decline, down 2.1 million barrels, due to cold temperatures and a dip in production and imports.

The US government data is due on Wednesday.

Lozada-Abalos face-off, ABS-CBN online forum draw nearly 30,000 posts

abs-cbnNEWS.com

An online poll conducted by ABS-CBN over the Internet and through texting showed that more people believe statements made by Senate star witness Rodolfo Noel "Jun" Lozada Jr. over those made by four government officials during the TV special "Harapan" simulcast over ABS-CBN Channel 2, the ABS-CBN News Channel and radio dzMM Teleradyo on Saturday night.

Online votes sent through text and the Internet surged as the TV special aired from 9:30 pm till around ten minutes past midnight. By the time the TV special ended, the poll results were at 92% in favor of Lozada's testimony. A mere 8% of voters doubted Lozada.

Lozada participated in the TV special via remote link-up to the studio from his quarters in La Salle High School Greenhills under the care of the Las nuns and religious.

Those results are far from final however, since the "Harapan" online poll and forum over www.abs-cbn.com that began noontime on Saturday is ongoing until February 19.

Voters may send in their views through email, text messages, forum posts and cast their vote by clicking either "Oo" (Yes) or "Hindi" (No) in answer to the question "Nagsasabi ba ng totoo si Lozada?" (Is Lozada telling the truth?) on the online poll.

During the nearly three-hour live TV special where Lozada faced government officials and allies whom he accused of either engaging in corruption, abetting it or helping cover it up, nearly thirty thousand voters weighed-in on their discussion.

During the program, Lozada mostly repeated statements he made at the recent Senate hearings on his supposed abduction by government operatives on February 5.

Still, he also had to respond to rebuttals made by government officials against his testimony. Those officials, who all guested during the show, included former Commission on Elections chair Benjamin Abalos Jr.; national police chief Director General Avelino Razon Jr.; deputy presidential spokesperson Anthony Golez; and Transportation Assistant Secretary Lorenzo Formoso III.

Abalos was accompanied by his lawyer Salvador Panelo.

As of 1:00 a.m. Sunday, ABS-CBN's "Harapan" forum and poll showed that 92% of the total number of voters believed Lozada's testimony while only 8% doubted him.

Majority of the almost 30,000 forum posts also expressed faith and support for the embattled Senate star witness.

"I do believe in Lozada's statement. His words are consistent and he speaks with dignity and sincerity," said viewer Ciella Lopez, in an email to ABS-CBN News.

"Lozada's narration and story is very credible," said Luis Hernandez, also via email. "The administration panel's story crumbles if one applies logic," he added.

Many emailers also cited that Lozada was "brave" enough to face the risks that came with the expose.

"Why will Jun Lozada expose the real deal on ZTE for his own benefit if he is not even getting anything out of the deal?" asked Diana, an emailer from Taiwan.

"The motive of Jun is clear enough - that he wants to correct the wrongdoing of the government and let the people know what disaster we will be facing due to the corrupt government officials," the emailer added.

"Hindi biro ang ginawa nyang pagbulgar sa anomalya. Parang bumangga siya sa higanteng pader, and to do that, its only [the] truth that will give you the courage to reveal [what you know]" said Ester Gevera, another emailer.

Face-off ala '1 vs 100'
Midway through the "Harapan" TV special, Lozada couldn't help but complain of exhaustion as he listened to Razon and company in order to respond to their rebuttals of his Senate statements.

Lozada said he could not help but feel like he was on the game show "1 vs. 100" where a lone contestant matched wits against a group of 100 people, collectively known as "The Mob."

Some viewers posted their complaints about what they called a "disadvantaged" situation for Lozada.

"The set-up of the show was unfair and biased," said Josie, a texter from General Santos City. "Time for Lozada was not given to him in full," she added.

Jerome, a texter from Sta. Ana, Manila, said that it was "quite unfair" that Lozada had "to face those people all by himself." He added that "the title was 'Harapan' so it's supposed to be only two persons."

Texter El Ayo from Davao even said that the show was a "lie detector test" for Lozada.

"ABS-CBN indirectly made this show 'Harapan' as a lie detector test [for] Lozada instead of a showdown between him and Abalos. This is unfair," his message read.

Anchors Korina Sanchez and Ricky Carandang explained that the "Harapan" was not only between Lozada and Abalos - who are among the main players in the controversy - but was also a chance for others accused by Lozada to air their side.

More importantly, it was an opportunity for audiences to weigh and compare statements made by Lozada and the accused government officials, in order to help them (audiences) decide for themselves which side is telling the truth.

People who sided with Lozada were also present during the latter part of the show.

Sis. Mary John Mananzan OSB of the Association of Major Religious Superiors of the Philippines, Alvin Peters of the National Union of Students of the Philippines, and Ramon Del Rosario of the Makati Business Club were present in the studio to contribute to Lozada's side of the discussion.

The other side
Not all who posted comments on the "Harapan" forum sided with Lozada.

"I don't think Lozada is saying the whole truth. He has a motive why he is doing this. Just look at his background first before you believe him," said emailer Margarita Cruz.

Lozada's latest revelation during the show was that, after he left for Hong Kong (supposedly on orders of Environment Secretary Lito Atienza) in an attempt to avoid attending the Senate hearing, Deputy Executive Secretary for Legal Affairs Manuel Gaite sent him half a million pesos.

Lozada said that since he was already in Hong Kong, it was his brother who picked up the P500,000 from Gaite. He said that the money remains untouched and that he plans to surrender it to the Senate at the next hearing.

Viewer Jouie Gabat reacted to this, saying: "He's no different from the people that he's attacking. Why did he not reveal the 500k when he was in the Senate if he did not have any intention of keeping it for himself in the first place?" said Gabat.

Vicky of Quezon City also said that Lozada says "incoherent stories" when "pushed against the wall," adding that "he's a big liar (and) manufacturer) of tall tales."

Some texters also said that Lozada and his supporters seemingly "do not want progress" for the Filipino because of the controversy they are creating.

"Marami talagang ayaw umasenso ang mga Pilipino. Isa na si Jun, (ang) MBC, (at mga) pari at madre kasi hindi nila magamit ang mahihirap," said Dong, a texter from Pandi, Bulacan.

Some also sided with Abalos, like texter Amado from Negros Oriental.

"We believe in the innocence of former Chair Abalos," the message read. "Our prayers are with you."
